Learn for Liberia

The Learn for Liberia program is a USAID funded project that, during the past year, has promoted the training of 66 war affected Liberian girls and women in the area of radio program production. It was developed on the premise that computer and satellite technology are essential for the promotion of distance learning for communities as well as teachers in Liberia.

Within less than one year, 4 radio clubs have been formed in Liberia and 6 individuals have been trained to use audio editing software and to teach these skills to other club members. Since April 2007 the clubs have continually broadcasted radio programs in Liberia’s rural areas with the support of the United Nations Mission In Liberia’s (UNMIL) radio station. A local community-based listening center has been established with the participation of 100 girls, women, boys and men in computer/media literacy, radio production and editing activities.

PSF recently announced that current Liberia Country Director, Ernest Hayes, is stepping down and will be replaced by Felicia Sullivan. The Phelps Stokes Fund commends Hayes for his leadership and service.
